A slain princess stirs in a dominion between life and death. With time running out in a realm broken by turmoil, Scarlet must triumph over her father’s murderer and find a fabled temple before her soul leaves her forever.
When East Meets West
Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet (originally named Hateshinaki Scarlet) was set to be viewed at the Venice Film Festival on September 4th and later released in North America on December 12th. However, due to the need for more notoriety before being released in the West, Studio Chizu decided to push the premiere to January 2026. Hosoda claims that once the film is well-received by its international critics, western audiences might find the movie more appealing. It’s a move Hosoda has done in the past with a few of his other films, such as Mirai (2018). Mirai was initially set to premiere on September 5th but was later rescheduled for September 12th of that year. The film, set to release in Japan on November 21st, has remained unchanged.
Film Synopsis
Scarlet is a film about a princess set in the medieval era. Skilled in armed combat, she embarks on a perilous adventure to exact justice for her father’s death. Her father’s killer fatally wounds Scarlet, but instead of succumbing to her injuries, she’s sent into a mysterious realm where she meets a hopeful young man from the present day. He does what he can to heal her, which offers a glimpse of a future free from the bitterness and rage that have consumed her. When her father’s killer reappears, Scarlet must face an even greater challenge: overcome the cycle of vengeance and discover a life with purpose beyond revenge. Scarlet is PG-13 with a run time of 1 hour and 51 minutes and has taken over four and a half years to produce.
