Love and Deepspace Wins Best Mobile Game at Gamescom 2025

The year 2025 has been huge for gaming of all varieties, from new thrilling Resident Evil games to heart-wrenching stories like in Expedition 33, but one of the most interesting rises to fame comes from an otome gatcha game created by Infold Games. On August 24th, Gamescom, one of the largest gaming events in the world, awarded 16 different awards to a variety of video games and gaming companies, including the now infamous Love and Deepspace. The reason this award-winning game has received such mixed reviews and reception from gaming fans stems from the nature of the game itself.

The Impact of Love and Deepspace’s Win

Other nominees in the mobile gaming category included Arknights: Endfield, Dungeon Clawler, Genshin Impact and Servant of the Lake. What stands out about this victory from Love and Deepspace is that it is the only nominee with a romantic focal point. Plus, Love and Deepspace was the only Chinese game to win an award at this year’s Gamescom. Their main rival in this category would be Genshin Impact, another “gacha” system game from a Chinese company.

So how and why did a mobile game that markets itself as a romance beat out such combat-driven games? The answer is a bit complicated, but the root of it is that there is a rise in the need for a female-focused market in gaming, and Love and Deepspace fills that void. According to Gitnux.com, female gamers constitute approximately 45% of the global gaming population. Additionally, women who game are more likely to purchase DLC or additional gaming content when playing games.

Love and Deepspace started gaining online traction through “thirst edits” of their handsome male characters. By doing this, the game attracted a lot of new players since they wanted to learn more about the characters and the game’s storyline.

The Premise of Love and Deepspace

In the sci-fi universe of Love and Deepspace, players create their own customizable female deepspace hunter. You follow along the main story to learn of your protagonist’s conflicts as a hunter, while being introduced to five characters in the story who you can romance off to the side by doing wishes for different dates and cards.

Beyond the main story, there is a lot you can do with your favorite love interests in the game. You can go on arcade dates to win prize plushies, have photobooth sessions and you can even have the love interests track your period.

Five love interests align with different archetypes: Xavier, the sleepy yet charming coworker and deepspace hunter; Rafayel, the sharp-tongued artist who recruits you as his bodyguard; Zayne, the stoic but gentle childhood friend turned doctor; Sylus, the mysterious bad boy with a soft side; and Caleb, another childhood friend hiding dark secrets.

These love interests have plot-heavy backgrounds and quirks that you learn about the more you play beyond the main story. There are monthly events where you can try to obtain new cards for each or all of the boys to learn more about their personalities and explore more of their love connections with the protagonist.

This mobile game features numerous moving parts that keep players engaged. For example, to read through the main story, you must complete combat trials with your love interests. Each boy has a different magic ability called an ‘EVOL’ which helps assist your ‘deepspace hunts.’ The combat in the game isn’t as intense as that of other similar games, but it does provide a challenge that players must overcome to continue the main storyline.

The Future of Love and Deepspace and Gaming for Female Audiences

This win is huge not just for Love and Deepspace fans, but also for romance lovers and female audiences as well. Otome games are story-based romance games with female protagonists, and these games are never taken seriously despite their in-depth storywriting. The only game with romance elements to recently win big is Baldur’s Gate 3, which does not fall into an ‘otome’ category since you can choose the gender of your protagonist to be male.

Whether you love it or hate it, Love and Deepspace’s success will continue to grow as Infold Games adds more content to this successful mobile game. The victory Infold has had might break the glass ceiling for other romance and otome games to find success in such a male-dominated market.
