In the near-future, video games have advanced to embrace full-dive virtual reality. With new technology comes a lot of experimental and downright bad games and in Japan, they’re referred to as “kusoge” or “trash games.”

Most gamers wouldn’t bother with them, but Rakuro Hizutome is a rare breed of gamer. He enjoys conquering these “trash games,” and has gained a very unique skill set. He decides to try out a “god-tier game,” Shangri-la Frontier. He logs in under the name “Sunraku,” instantly hooked by how real and seamless the gameplay feels. A new adventure begins with plenty of mysteries to solve and monsters to fight as well.

S1 & S2 Recap

Spoiler alert for seasons one and two.

Season One introduced us to the world of Shangri-la Frontier. Its open world and emphasis on discovery are perfect for a solo player like Sunraku. During his travels, he’s cursed by Lycagon the Nightslayer, one of seven unique boss monsters in the game. He later defeated another of these unique monsters, Wethermon the Tomb Guard. He was assisted by two other players, Oikatzo the professional gamer, and Pencilgon, the former player killer.

Season Two featured a rematch with Lycagon. This time, Sunraku was helped by Psyger-0, who in reality has a huge unrequited crush on him, and Akitsuakane, who recognized him from another game. Later, Sunraku gets embroiled in another quest to face another boss monster, Ctarnidd of the Abyss. Meanwhile, in the real world, Oikatzo recruits Sunraku and Pencilgon for an exhibition match. This match features the newest fighting game, “Galaxia Heroes: CHAOS.” Season 2 ends with the preamble to the match against a US esports team, Star Rain, and their undefeated ace Syvlia Goldberg.
