Welcome to Kinokuniya’s “Monthly Staff Pick Sale!” Each month, the popular bookstore chain selects a few book titles that members can purchase at a 20% discount. The sale lasts the entire month, while supplies last, and is available in-store and online. March heralds the spring season in Japan, so in honor of new beginnings, volume 1, of March Comes in Like a Lion, and omnibus 1, of The Fable are on sale.
March Comes in Like a Lion (Art and Story by Chica Umino)
Rei Kiriyama is a shogi (Japanese chess) prodigy. At just 17 years old, he’s already entered the pro circuit and achieved the rank of 5th dan. Despite his accomplishments, his life feels empty outside of shogi. No real friends to speak of, no life beyond the game board and nothing to ease his heart but the river. He simply walked through life in a melancholic daze. Alas, time marches on. The seasons change, and little by little, Rei’s world starts to open up. He will discover that shogi has way more to offer than just painful memories. The people he meets, and the connections he makes through the game, will become more valuable than any trophy or rank.
The Fable (Art and Story by Katsuhisa Minami)
Few names are as feared in the Japanese underworld as “the Fable.” His talent for assassination leaves even the toughest yakuza shaking in their boots. He can put anyone six feet under, in under six seconds. Underneath his hitman persona, however, is a weirdo who likes stupid jokes and bad TV. One day, his boss tells him to take a break from the criminal lifestyle and kick back as a normal citizen for a year. The only stipulation is that killing is off-limits. Set up with a new apartment, a fake sibling, and a parrot, “the Fable”, and takes on his most difficult mission yet.
