Just in time for spooky season, the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s iconic manga Uzumaki received a brand new trailer ahead of its September 28th debut on Adult Swim.
"Uzumaki" Anime Adaptation
The release date of the series, which is set to be four episodes, was announced at San Diego Comic Con back in July. However, this project has been highly anticipated for a while now. It is an adaptation of one of Japan’s most iconic horror manga artists, Junji Ito. While this is far from the first anime adaptation of his works (several of his short stories have been animated in two anthology series called Junji Ito Collection and Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre), Uzumaki will be an adaptation of one of his most popular and well known series. Originally serialized in 1998, it has since become a landmark of Japanese horror manga and helped to solidify Ito as a master of the genre.
The latest trailer takes viewers through some of the visual highlights of the story of Uzumaki, which takes place in the small Japanese coastal town of Kurozu-cho and follows teenagers Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito. According to Shuichi, the town is cursed – haunted by the uzumaki, or the spiral pattern. Over the course of the tale, the obsession with the uzumaki starts to take over every aspect of the town and drive its residents to madness.
The Perfect Series for Spooky Season
Excitement for this series comes not only from love of the original manga, but also interest in what has been seen of the show itself. The animation style of the series appears to be leaning heavily into the unsettling and evocative art of the source material that its author is so well known for. This is a bit of a departure from other adaptations of Ito’s work. The show also appears to be entirely black and white, making it look like it was taken directly from the pages of the beloved manga.
Originally announced in 2019, the anime adaptation of Uzumaki has survived a number of delays and is finally almost here. The Japanese language premiere with English subtitles of the series will air September 28th on Adult Swim. Both the subbed and dubbed versions of each episode will be available the next day on MAX. Hopefully this highly anticipated series ends up being a great kickoff for the Halloween season.
