The original English dub voice actress of Misty and Jessie from the beloved Pokémon series has died. Rachael Lillis, 55*, died Saturday evening, August 10. She had breast cancer.
Remembering Rachael Lillis' Impact
Veronica Taylor, the original voice actress of Pokémon’s protagonist Ash Ketchum, shared the news on her social media:
“It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Rachael Lillis on Saturday evening, 10 August, 2024.
Rachael was an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice whether speaking or singing. She will forever be remembered for the many animated roles she played, with her iconic performances as Pokémon’s Misty and Jessie being the most beloved.
Rachael was so thankful for all of the generous love and support that was given to her as she battled with cancer. It truly made a positive difference. Her family also wishes to thank you as they take this time to grieve privately. A memorial is being planned for a future date. With love, Veronica.”
Moreover, Pokémon fans, content creators, and fellow voice actors also expressed their sadness and the impact Lillis had on their childhoods on X (formerly Twitter) Monday morning.

About Rachael Lillis
Lillis was born in 1969 and studied acting in New York City and Boston. Trained as an on-stage actress, Lillis made her voiceover debut in the 1980’s*, and her most well-known roles are Pokémon’s Misty and Jessie from 1997 to 2006. Also, she performed as multiple pokémon, such as Vulpix, Venonat and Goldeen. Her work can also be heard in Hunter x Hunter, Sonic X, Your Lie in April, and many more.
Lillis was an integral part of the Pokémon community, and she will be missed. May she rest in peace.
