One Piece Remake Announced at Jump Festa
2024’s Jump Festa, an annual event from the publisher Shueisha featuring massive amounts of news about the manga and anime series based on its properties, was jam packed this year. Topping the whole thing off was the special stage for the legendary series One Piece, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. 2024 will be the 25th anniversary of the anime adaptation, and it was previously hinted that some big things were in the works for the celebration. What ended up being revealed at the event is that despite the beloved anime adaptation being ongoing, a brand new remake is now in the works from a different animation studio.
Titled THE ONE PIECE, the series will start from the very beginning of the manga once again with the “East Blue Arc.” The first time this arc was animated was back in 1999, when the original anime series from Toei Animation began. Currently, there have been 1,088 episodes of the anime released since 1999, and the next arc of the original series titled “Egghead” has already been confirmed for a January 2024 release date. For fans of the original anime, don’t panic – the new adaptation will not be putting an end to the ongoing one. THE ONE PIECE will be separate from the original series, and the original will continue on as it has for twenty five years.
According to the official One Piece website, the remake will be animated by WIT Studio, known for Spy x Family and the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, and will be distributed by Netflix. The goal as described by the production committee is to provide a modern redrawing of the show in the hopes of passing the story of One Piece on to future generations. While the original series has left an incredible mark on the anime landscape and is one of the most popular anime series currently running, the fact that it began in 1999 does mean that the animation is an older style and was made without a lot of the more modern technologies and techniques available to animators today. The decision to redo the anime is not to discount or replace the original adaptation, but to provide another one using everything available to modern animators to tell the story of One Piece in a new way.
No official release date for THE ONE PIECE was announced at Jump Festa, and it seems that will still be a long way off. A teaser video was released, showing an animator going back to the very first volume of One Piece to start the journey anew. More information about the series will be released in the future.
