Anime Throwback Spotlight: Get Backers

Recovery Service is near 100%! In this anime throwback spotlight, we are talking about Get Backers. Get Backers is an anime that was released in Japan in 2002 and in the United States in 2004. As a manga, it was released in Japan in 1999 and released in 2004 in the U.S.

Get Backers Plot

The story talks about two juveniles named Ban Mido and Ginji Amano that retrieve items that are lost or stolen. Ban Mido has a power that can create illusions known as the “Evil Eye” while Ginji Amano creates lightning. He was also the leader of a street gang known as “The Volts.” The Volts were based in the dangerous territory known as Infinity Fortress in Shinjuku.

As a duo, not only do they recover lost or stolen items, they also go through major obstacles when having to retrieve these items. One example is in episodes three and four, when Ban and Ginji take on a recovery job through their associate, Hevn. The pair had to help a politician recover a box that was being transported. However, they were unaware that the transport security being hired on the other side were dangerous individuals: Magaruma, who was known as “The Man with No Brakes” and Himiko Kudo (AKA Lady Poison). Himiko was known for her poisonous perfumes. Finally, there was the most gruesome individual yet, Kuroudo Akabane, who liked slaughtering people for the fun of it with the use of his scalpels.

Anime vs. Manga

The episodes are loaded with action and tension. However, the anime isn’t as detailed as the manga. The anime was based off of manga volumes one through fifteen. The manga, as a whole, totals up to thirty-nine volumes in Japanese, and twenty-seven volumes in English.

The anime is a good substitute for getting into the series, especially since the English manga volumes are out of print. If one wants to purchase Get Backers manga in English, get ready to pay high dollars for them. The later volumes can range from $20.00 to almost $40.00 for one volume online via eBay.

Writer Recommendation

I highly recommend both watching the anime and reading the manga. The anime has a straightforward, brief plot to enjoy. However, if you want to go into more detail about Ban and Ginji’s backstory along with supporting characters like Akabane, I recommend reading the manga.
