Anime has grown in popularity world-wide in the last few years. Whether you are a new fan of anime or have been a fan since childhood, it is always helpful to receive recommendations for new things to watch. Here is a list of five underrated anime we believe deserve more attention. Each of these series can be found on Crunchyroll or Hulu.
Seraph of the End – Underrated, unfinished anime
Seraph of the End, or Owari no Seraph, is an anime from 2015 that has 24 episodes. The series follows the struggle between mankind and vampire-kind through the eyes of the main characters, Mikaela and Yuichiro Hyakuya. A virus ends up wiping out most of humanity, leaving whoever was left to either become enslaved to the vampires or destroyed by them. Tragedy befalls both Mikaela and Yuichiro, and the two of them vow to avenge their loved ones in very different ways. The anime is unfinished, but the manga is still updating on Shonen Jump.
Toilet-Bound Hanako Kun – One season anime
Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun is a supernatural anime with 12 episodes. Nene Yashiro, a first year high school student, hears a rumor about a ghost that resides in the girls’ bathroom that grants wishes. Desperate to find a boyfriend to love her, Yashiro makes her wish and meets Hanako, the toiler ghost. Yashiro ends up bound to Hanako, and the two of them start an unlikely friendship that leads to even more supernatural and ghostly adventures.
The Case Study of Vanitas – Underrated anime
The Case Study of Vanitas, or Vanitas no Carte, is a fantasy series that takes place in 19th-century Paris. A vampire named Noé Archiviste meets Vanitas, a man who is on a mission to heal vampires who have lost themselves due to a strange curse. When the two of them team up, Noé learns that he has been naive to the real threat to vampires. There are currently 24 episodes that are caught up with the manga.
Link Click – Underrated donghua
Link Click is a Chinese donghua that deals with elements of time travel. Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang have special powers that allow them to see past events of people within photographs. Cheng has the ability to enter the photo while Lu guides him to see what took place in the past. The two of them take on clients who are looking for closure of sorts for things that have already occurred, but Lu is adamant that the two of them work hard not to change anything about the past. Season 1 has 11 episodes, and season 2 will begin July 14th.
Buddy Daddies – New, underrated anime
Buddy Daddies is a new, original anime as of 2023. This series follows Rei and Kazuki, two assassins who become accidental parents to a little girl named Miri. Rei and Kazuki try to balance their work life with parenthood and realize it is not as easy as they thought. They also learn a lot about themselves along the way as their priorities begin to change. Buddy Daddies has one season and looks to have been wrapped up in the final episode.
