Upcoming Netflix Anime Series, Akuma Kun, Reveals More Cast Members!

The announcement reveals new cast members for four of the anime’s supporting characters:

Ryoko Shirashi as Akuma’s Mom, Sanae Kazama
Yumiri Hanamori as Sanae’s daughter, Mio Kazama
Fairouz Ai as the demon, Gremory
Yukiyo Fujii as a college student client, Hina Asanagi

Originally released in the ‘60s, Akuma Kun tells the story of a child prodigy trying to create a world where all humans can live happily. The catch? He’s going to need the help of some demons to do so. This tale has had many tellings over the years, all beginning with the original writer and illustrator, Shigeru Mizuki.

  • A three volume manga, published by Toshansha from 1963-1964
  • A single volume run in Weekly Shonen Magazine from 1966-1967, published by Kodansha
  • Another single volume run in Weekly Shonen Jump  from 1970-1971, published by Shueisha

The story then took to the screen with multiple adaptations as well:

  • A 26 episode live-action series from 1966-1967, starring Misunobu Kaneko as the lead character. This series was directed by Akira Kashima, Hajime Sato, Minoru Yamada, T. Kobayashi, Itaru Orita, K. Takemoto, and Katsuhiko Taguchi.
  • A 42 episode anime directed by Junichi Sato, from Toei Animation Studios. It ran on TV Asahi from 1989-1990.

This latest anime adaptation is scheduled for release later this year from Netflix. Junichi Sato returns to direct this anime with the help of Fumitoshi Oizaki. This anime is part of a tribute to Shigeru Mizuki since his passing in 2015, celebrating the 100-year Anniversary of his birth. Hiroshi Onogi is the writer of this adaptation and it will be produced jointly by Toei Animation and Encourage Films.

I, for one, am excited to be able to see such a historical tribute to anime. What do you guys think? Have any of you seen any of the other forms that this story has taken? Let us know down below!
