Anime is filled with delicious foods, and thanks to the talent of the animation studios, these sometimes ordinary dishes look like something out of a five-star restaurant. Anime fans have long discussed the meals they wish they could eat, so here are our top 10 anime meals we wish we could try.
10. Spaghetti – Hunter x Hunter
Served at Caveau de Riquewhir, the spaghetti on Greed Island seems to be just your average plate of spaghetti. The mountain of pasta, topped with a meaty tomato sauce, mushrooms, and parsley is something that anyone could make themselves. But, what makes this dish so exciting? If you finish the plate within 30 minutes, you don’t have to pay. Who doesn’t love free food?
9. Strawberry Shortcake – Death Note
Fans of Death Note will know that L enjoys his sweets – it’s all he’s shown eating in the anime. One of the repeated dishes throughout the story is strawberry shortcake, a light sponge cake filled and topped with whipped cream and glazed strawberries. With all the desserts L eats throughout the story, it would be safe to assume he’s become quite the sweets connoisseur and if he’s repeating a dish, it has to be excellent.
8. Katsudon – Yuri on Ice
Katsudon, aka pork cutlet bowls, played a significant role in Yuri on Ice in both being a favorite meal for the characters and being an inspiration for Yuri Katsuki. The dish is simple: a bowl of rice topped with a breaded pork cutlet, an egg omelet, vegetables, and other condiments. What really makes the meal so appealing is Yuri’s mentor, Victor Nikiforov, who describes it as the “food that Gods eat”. That description is enough to make fans wish they could try the meal.
7. Toast with Butter and Jam – Chainsaw Man
Aside from kissing a girl, one of Denji’s dreams in Chainsaw Man is to have toast with jam. In episode two, Denji makes that dream a reality. Denji tops his toast with strawberry jam, plum jam, orange marmalade, butter, honey, and cinnamon. This meal seems like a mess to eat; but if it’s worth making a deal with a demon, it has to be delicious.
6. Bacon and Eggs – Howl’s Moving Castle
Crispy fried bacon and over-easy eggs are a breakfast staple in diners across the United States, but can these cooks say they received help from a fire demon to make their meal? The food in any studio Ghibli Film always looks so amazing, but there’s something about the simplicity of this meal that causes viewers to want a plate as well.
5. Steak (and potatoes) – Attack on Titan
Sasha Blouse made her entrance in Attack on Titan in a memorable way, by eating a stolen potato during her initiation to the 104th Training Corps. From that moment on, she became known among fans as a character defined by food, so naturally, any meal she makes is going to be an amazing one. ***SPOILER*** During a cook-off with Jean, Sasha cooks the best steak of her life with the finest ingredients she can find. While it wasn’t enough to win the competition, the dish was so savory that Dot Pixis turned into a Titan. Any meal with that level of taste and power is worth being on this list.
4. Instant Ramen – Dragon Ball Super
There are plenty of meals across the Dragon Ball universe that fans want to try, though instant ramen is a dish fans dream about. In DBS, Vegeta prepares a serving of instant ramen for Whis, an angel who assists Beerus, and he considers it one of the best meals he’s ever had. Beerus, the God of Destruction, later serves the instant ramen during a food showdown with his brother, Champa. With so many deities hailing the dish as a supreme meal, it’s hard to not crave it whenever it comes on screen.
3. Transforming Furikake Gohan – Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma
Furikake gohan, or furikake rice, is a simple rice dish topped with furikake seasoning and other assorted toppings including egg, fish, or whatever else you have in the fridge. In Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, the protagonist Soma elevates the meal by topping the dish with eggs coated in chilled chicken broth. The technique of the dish is what makes it so exquisite; using jellied chicken broth cubes that melt and seep through the dish, adding depths of flavor to every bite. The dish has definitely earned its place in the anime meals Hall of Fame.
2. Miso Ramen – Naruto
It wouldn’t be a true anime food list if we didn’t talk about the ramen served at Ichiraku Ramen in Naruto. This miso-based ramen is topped with extra chashu/pork, bamboo shoots, green onions, a soft-boiled egg, and the signature naruto fish cake. Since the meal is Naruto’s favorite and is basically the only thing he eats, it has to be one of the most craved meals in anime history. It’s also a simple dish and one that fans can order at most ramen shops which allows us all to feel like an anime protagonist.
1. Jelly Donuts – Pokemon
When Pókemon aired in Japan, the dish Brock served was onigiri – a rice cake that can contain fillings such as red bean paste or a variety of fish, and then is shaped and wrapped with nori. However, in the English dub of the anime, Brock’s onigiri became jelly donuts. The mistranslation has led fans to wonder what could be in the donuts/onigiri and what would make them so tasty. Brock is also the chef of the team as he journeys through Kanto and beyond with Ash and Misty, so his cooking skills must be tasty enough that the bunch ate the meal without question. Because of that, we think Brock’s jelly donuts deserve the top spot of anime meals we wish we could try.
