“All Devils Are Born With A Name.”
MAKIMA
Champion
Letterboxd’s 2025 Year in Review announced Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc as the highest-rated movie of the year. In comes Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc as the topping champion over all other anime movie productions, surpassing even Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle as Number 1, according to the global film-tracking community. Bomb!
This triumph charts the annual “Highest Rated” movies list above a wide range of critically acclaimed, both live-action and animated films, including Sinners and Marty Supreme. This is a big deal for anime, proving the genre is more than cartoons and imagery, but also a potential cinematic feat. The love for anime is finally hitting a climax, showcasing great filmmaking.
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc was more than a popular release of an anticipated continuation of the story. It has become the most celebrated film of the year, emerging as a winner on one of the world’s most influential movie rating platforms and scoring multiple Top Honors.
Letterboxd Hit
Aside from being the number 1 film overall on Letterboxd, the anime feature also took home several other honors on the platform, including Highest Rated Animation, a true nod to the graphic and seamless movements, Highest Rated Asian Film, a nod to its origin, and Highest Rated Directorial Debut for Tatsuya Yoshihara’s praising him for his incredible first feature-length outing.
Community Driven
Letterboxd’s rankings are driven by user ratings and reviews. It is a community of passionate fans, proving that Chainsaw Man’s accolades are a true representation of anime and movie lovers, resonating with audiences across the board. It introduced anime to more than its general audiences, inviting new viewers and fans to the genre.
What is Chainsaw Man?
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc adapts a pivotal arc from the hit manga of the same name, Chainsaw Man, written by Tatsuki Fujimoto, into a feature-length animated film. Just as the series is produced by MAPPA, so is the film, as MAPPA is known for its beautiful blend of intense action, incredibly detailed imagery, and emotional storytelling. The colors reveal the hidden feelings at play in the story. The dark moments are not overplayed, but rather divulging of true nature.
Reze Arc focuses particularly on Denji’s human need for a relationship, delving into the complex, dangerous world of devils and Denji’s development. Reze herself captivates viewers with her innocent, naive, subtle magnetism that diverges into a dark, sensual, lethal killer. She uses her female charms and innocent personality as a magnet for inducement. Viewers and Denji find themselves entranced.
We see a more nuanced theme in Reze Arc. Denji stands between two worlds, sworn to a life fated with twists and continued foreshadowing. The argument of the human condition lingers. While the true intentions for Denji’s future are left unanswered, obscured in the hints and whispers of ticking. Tick – Tick.
Other Accolades and Recognition
Outside of Letterboxd, the movie also earned strong cinema ratings of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, a high approval score, and an incredible box-office performance, including #1 in North America.
A notable recognition is Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc’s nomination by the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Animation Film, winning Female Character of the Year at the Anithing 2025 Awards, Annie Awards nomination for “Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Feature” for Tatsuya Yoshihara, and the Anime Trending Awards nomination for “Anime Movie of The Year”. These accolades further bolster its reputation as a victory and an accomplishment.
Congratulations to all involved on this incredible win!
