Original creator Hajime Yatate, who has a lengthy reputation with Bandai Namco from decades of phenomenal works such as Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX and Mashin Creator Wataru, returns to announce the remake of one of the most beloved classics of the 80s. Hajime Yatate, whom a few people know this, is actually a pseudonym; a combination of collected efforts for those who worked at SUNRISE Studios which was later absorbed into Bandai-Namco. This vast knowledge of works set the stage of the technological era of anime that has stemmed over 50 years. Animes such as Samurai Trooper Gaiden, Cowboy Bebop, Vision of Escaflowne and Escaflowne the Movie, and Armored Trooper VOTOMS franchise; imagine Gundam mobile suits in a Mad Max Thunderdome dystopian-esque type situation.
Yoroiden Samurai Troopers is a complete reboot of the hit series Ronin Warriors, which aired between 1988 and 1995; new characters, shiny new armor, same earth-conquering dynasty. Accompanying him is director Yôichi Fujita, who previously worked on Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and Gintama: The Very Final. Finally, music composer Osamu Katayama, last known for films like Owari ni Mita Machi and Hitman from Today, joins the team.
Haruki Ishibashi is best known for his voice acting work on Pokémon Horizons: The Series and The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. He will take on the role of Gai as the main protagonist. which is an interesting parallel to the original series’ leading character, Sanada Ryo, who was voiced by Takeshi Kusao (Japanese), and Matt Hill (English).
Sadly, SUNRISE Studios is keeping us on the edge of our seats with their upcoming project. Only Ishibashi and the initials of the voice actors cast for the remaining four protagonists have been released: A.M. for Suiren (Water Lily), S.T. for Kouya (Wilderness), J.E. for Soukyuu (Sky Blue), and K.K. for Senko (Light). To explain what the armors represent, one would have to deep dive into samurai philosophy. Miyamoto Musashi was one of the greatest swordsmen in Japanese history. In his book, The Book of Five Rings, he spoke of five main elements and two minor elements: Water, Fire, Earth (rock), Air, Emptiness (the mind), Wood (organic life), and Electricity (energy or light). In Samurai Trooper each set of armor represents the world’s natural elements. The only change so far from the original to the reboot is that Kento Rei Fuan who wore the Armor of Hardrock, has now been substituted for the armor of Wilderness.
The main character, Gai, is the only character teased in the trailer. All other main protagonists’ voices, characters, and armor designs may be shown in the coming months before said release. Yoroiden Samurai Troopers will premiere in January of 2026. However, the region has yet to be reported until then.
