Synopsis:
In Kowloon Walled City, life moves at its own pace. Amidst the narrow walkways, between levels upon levels of residencies, atop windy rooftops, the people are content immersing themselves in nostalgia. For real estate agent Reiko Kujirai, even the simple act of munching watermelon after a smoke is a pleasure she can only experience in Kowloon. As time goes on, though, new feelings begin welling up. She sees memories she doesn’t remember making. However, at the center of it all is her co-worker Hajime Kudou, who feels familiar and yet not. In Kowloon, where everything is steeped in the past, can Kujirai make her own future?
Kowloon Generic Romance is written and illustrated by Jun Mayuzuki, best known for her previous work After the Rain. Kowloon Generic Romance has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine since 2019 and has been compiled into 10 tankobon volumes.
The manga is a slow burn, taking its time to immerse the reader in its world. The environments and backgrounds are full of detail. Also, many panels frame the characters against stunning backdrops. At its core, there is a budding romance between Reiko and Hajime. Although, various twists and turns keep their relationship on edge. Elements of mystery and science-fiction exert subtle influences over the characters, yet have massive implications. Furthermore, not everything is as it seems in Kowloon, and for every answer the manga gives, there are ten more questions waiting on the next page.
Kowloon Generic Romance is available for purchase from Yen Press.
