“Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again:” Episode Two Review

This week’s episode of Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again is sure to make your cheeks blush! Here is our review of episode two.

"Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again" Episode Two

Grandpa (Shozo) and Grandma (Ine) spent this episode navigating what they are “allowed” to do as grandparents that are young again, such as holding hands, flirting, wearing certain clothes, and eating sweets. This episode covers chapters 10-29 of the manga, and though the scenes happen in different orders between the anime and manga, it doesn’t affect the storyline.

This episode has many adorable moments, yet also shows some of the struggles each grandparent goes through. Although the two have been married many decades, they don’t know how or if they should show affection. They share many sweet moments that you can’t help but smile at, such as the couple celebrating another anniversary together, and surprising one another with the same cake! They try to become a little more touchy-feely by trying to get the other to hold their hand and walk down the street together.

One great improvement from last week’s episode is that the anime limited the amount of inappropriate comments about the Saitos’ looks to almost none. This is also reflected in the manga. While there are still comments about how good they look, none were uncomfortable. Comments about their appearance were from their son, a doctor, while he was conducting a check up, or the kids who noticed the Saitos in the apple farm.

Overall Episode Review

An issue I still have with this series is how it feels like a compilation of mini stories that are one after the other, and they are not related (other than the titular central theme). Every two to three minutes, there is a new topic that is unrelated to the last scene. Though I enjoy every small storyline, I do wish there was a way to transition the scenes a little smoother or make them seem connected.

For example, the Saitos go on a walk and say they will go home for stew. Yet, the following scene is them at the doctor’s office, then at home celebrating their anniversary by eating cake. By reordering the scenes to show the Saitos on a walk, adding a scene with stew and eating cake at home before going to the doctor’s office, the order of the story would have made more sense.

Overall, I am pleasantly surprised with how the anime is turning out. The grandparents’ love really shines through, and the inappropriate jokes seem to have subsided. I am curious to see if the Saitos will stay young forever or if they will turn old again. It will be interesting to see how the animation studio will continue to format these mini stories.

Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again’s episodes are released weekly on Sundays, available to watch on Crunchyroll.
